Galloping along the beach just above the water line is just one type of equestrian vacation any of us horse riding enthusiast can thoroughly enjoy. An equestrian vacation for others may be sitting on top of an English saddle as our trained steed proudly high steps around the groomed surface of a riding ring. The pleasure of cantering through a green pasture or walking along a tree lined horse trail on a Western saddle mounted on the back of a beautiful Appaloosa is certainly another example of an equestrian vacation. Horseback riding is just another of our extreme outdoor adventures which should be pursued any time we can, for as short or long a period as we can allow ourselves. Though a short few minute ride may not seem like a holiday to some, for others it is a glorious chance for a mini escape from the normal routines of everyday life, and therefore, an equestrian vacation.

The joy of co-existing with a horse, such as on a dude ranch, for days on end and becoming totally familiar with all the particulars of saddling, bridling, and riding these majestic animal much larger than ourselves is certainly an equestrian vacation. These amazing creatures, though enormously powerful, can be extremely gentle and relish us caring for them. They need brushing, grooming, washing, feeding, watering and exercising. Their barns and stalls need mucking out and their blankets and halters need cleaning and drying. This may sound like a lot of work, and it certainly can be, but, for those who love these long legged creatures and the feel of sitting on them, especially bareback, as they move, it is merely a fundamental part of their equestrian vacation.

A well trained horse can be ridden and guided by anyone of any age, except the very young, who should be taken for rides, due to the tremendous strength of the Equine species. Many children experience their first joys of being around horses while on an equestrian vacation, while older folks perpetuate their horsemanship and their fond memories of past adventures. An equestrian vacation is a time of holding out a carrot, a apple, a handful of picked clover, or a sugar cube, and delighting as a massive, muscular, and beautiful animal walks slowly up and gently nozzles the treats from your hand. It is the unbelievable feeling up picking up each of your mounts powerful legs and checking the shoes attached to its hooves to insure they are properly seated and clean. It is the knowledge any horse is allowing us to become its partner so we both can enjoy each others attributes and friendship. These are all parts of our equestrian vacation.

So, don’t think about it, get out the fly spray and assist your large friend in ridding itself of some of its annoyances. Brush out its coat, toss on a blanket, place a saddle on its back, tighten the girth, slip on a bridle, adjust the stirrups, put your left foot up, throw your right leg over its back, sit down, grab the reins and take off on an exhilarating equestrian vacation.
